What you did should have worked too if you checked "always open..." under the list of programs once you chose Windows Media Player.

Try unselecting them, applying the settings, and then reselecting them.
Sometimes, if there isn't a recognised change made, then the settings are left untouched instead of being reset (hope that makes sense).
Even better, install another player such as
Winamp, or Quickime, which notoriously steals file type associations, and have that set itself as the default player, and then have Windows Media Player set itself as the default player (or just keep using Winamp).
Also, if the icon have been changed in appearance, but it is still the same icon being shown, just now modified, not a different icon, reinstalling Windows Media Player and/or Windows might restore them.
