O.P. .mp3 and .wma icons changed
for some reason, when i checked my mp3's abd wma's, the file icons have changed. Instead of being the windows media player icons, they have a little greeny/blue speaker and the file icon.
i have tried changing what they open with but still no luck.
heres a screeny

You can set Windows Media Player to play mp3 and wma by default again by going to tools > options > filetypes (tab)...enable mp3 and wma in the list and click on "ok".

What you did should have worked too if you checked "always open..." under the list of programs once you chose Windows Media Player.

icons are always a prob. my html files show up wid the "unknown filetype" icon. which i really hate. try setting the default icon through a program like stylexp or icon packager,

It means you might have a virus. It happened to a friend of mine before. I believe it was LoveLetter that did it. All of the mp3's were hidden, and the file was replaced with a copy of the virus with the same name of the mp3. So every time you went to play the song, oops! you just execute the virus again...

In your case, the icon is still a media icon, so its not LoveLetter (loveletter changed it to a script icon), but still could be the work of a crafty virus

well i have pretty good protection from viruses and im careful to what i download from the internet
so it kinda rules out that, but ill run a scan just in case.

come to think of it, i uninstalled stylexp. maybe that might of changed it.

[Edit] did a quick scan of my comp, no viruses. also reinstalled stylexp and reset the icons back to the windows default (even though they wernt changed in the first place) still no difference

Try unselecting them, applying the settings, and then reselecting them.

Sometimes, if there isn't a recognised change made, then the settings are left untouched instead of being reset (hope that makes sense).

Even better, install another player such as Winamp, or Quickime, which notoriously steals file type associations, and have that set itself as the default player, and then have Windows Media Player set itself as the default player (or just keep using Winamp).

Also, if the icon have been changed in appearance, but it is still the same icon being shown, just now modified, not a different icon, reinstalling Windows Media Player and/or Windows might restore them.
