O.P. Would you buy this?
I have recetly become very interested in purchasing a new desktop, as the one i have now is clearly not good enough for the processes i wish to run. Atm i have a very old dell computer and wish to buy a new desktop all together. This new desktop will be souly for playing lots of computer games, eg counter-strike, generals wow, and having msn and more programmes running at the same time, I have searched numerous sites to try and find the best gaming pc, but the main view on the internet if you are in to gaming, is to either buy the seperate componants and put it together yourself, which im not clever enough to do :D, or get someone who does know what he/she is doing and get them to do the job for you. Which is what i have chosen to do, These are the ground rules that i gave him................:-

- it must be very very fast
- the grafics must look very pretty :D
- i must be able to run numerous straining  processes at the same time
- i give you a maximum of £1750

This is the final idea that he sent me.

Case: Raidmax Titan graphite gaming case

Motherboard:  Asus M2N-E AM2 Skt940 nForce 570 Ultra  SATA RAID PCI-E x16 Giga LAN +8ch

Processor:AMD FX 62 Dual Core socket AM2 Processor

Hard disc: 320 GB Seagate Barracuda® ATA100 7200rpm 16MB

monitor: VideoSeven L19WA 19" WideScreen 8MS Silver & Black Monitor

Graphics card: XFX  GeForce 7950 GX2 1024MB  DUAL GPU DVIx2 PCI-E

Drives: LG  DVD +/-R/RW 16x16x8x6x5 Dual layer IDE OEM LG

Memory: Ram 3GB Kingston Value Ram  533MHz DDR2 Non-ECC

PSU: Power supply Silverstone Strider460W PSU 120mm fan 22dBA SATA support +PFC

He has told me that he can make this computer for me at a cost of exactly £1750

Basically if you have any positive, critical , hyperlinks comments please dont hesitate to post, i need as much helpfull information as i can, anything about any componants, the price, ANYTHING!

That is a pretty good system, and the price offered is quite reasonable.

However, be aware that if you are not too confortable with comptuers, then buying a computer from a mate may not be the best option for you. If there are any troubles with the comptuer, your freind may be reluctant to help you.
Also, if you buy from a company, within certain limits you are guarenteed a certain level of quality, you can't be so sure with a friend.

Edit: I just configured a similar system on Dell.co.uk, the final price was £1,791 inc Delivery and VAT.

Processor: Intel Core Duo E6400 2.12GHz
OS: XP Home
Memory: 2GB
HDD: 320GB (2x160GB RAID 0)
Drives: DVD+/-RW Drive 16x
Video Card: Dual 256 nVidia GeForce 7900GS
Monitor: 19" Flat Panel
Sound: 5.1 Surround

This also comes with 3 Years onsite support.

That is overkill on so many fronts.

For example: You probably don't need that much RAM for a desktop computer. 2GB would probably be more than enough for the average user.

Indeed.

But since you have a seemingly bottomless pit of money to spend on a desktop at 14 years old, add a floppy drive (you may not use it, but you'll probably need it if you ever reformat) and another DVD drive. Add a soundcard too.

In a word. No.
FXs are not cost effective, neither are 1024mb graphics cards.
You'd be better off getting two 512mb SLI graphics cards.
