I agree, Symbian systems really are great, I have a N-Gage (old one, sukcs, but the symbian makes it better ).

I'm in the market too and I'm thinking about whether to get the Sony Ericsson W800i (GSM) or the Nokia 6265i (CDMA).

Symbian phones allow user to install native apps (not java) like AgileMessenger which is very good instant messaging program. You can also install many other apps like screensavers, google maps and some games too (also N-Gage games will work).

The 3G thing is also something I have but is quite unstable and it works only in main cities here in Finland. I don't know if it's only here in Finland that sometimes in 3G areas calls won't come to phone but goes to answering machine. Usually downloads are from 10kB/s to 40kB/s. The main reason for this phone is that I have free 3G/GPRS so I can get Internet everywhere and use it with laptop.

Still if you even think that you would need 3G take it. Especially if you plan to keep that phone more than year.

You can do all you mentioned above on the Java platform.
I have seen all of what you mentioned as a java app
Example:
mig33 - Instant Messenger
Ruza - Something like a screensaverp
J2meMap - Google map java application
Zelda Mobile - One of the many mobile java games
As you can see, many stuff are available for the java platform (especially if your phone has MIDP 2.0 which the K800 has, and every new phone in general).

You should get a symbian phone however, if you want more advanced features like PDF document reading.
If you decide to get a symbian phone, get a sony ericsson symbian phone

The point was that symbian apps can be more advanced and work faster than java apps. Although symbian itself on my 6630 is pretty slow in menus.

I have an n80 with 3G and all i can see as an advantage is faster internet and video calling.
