Too late, already tried that, and also checked every other resource using ResourceHacker... they don't appear to be embedded that way... unless you can prove me wrong.

However, I took a look at fukafly's new icons and they look good. With a bit of eraser-work on the button edges they look pretty freakin' smooth :)

I also tried with ResHacker, and wasn't too happy with result... if you right-click>copy icon, it won't copy transparency... you will get the same result as if you just PrintScreened it...

I think CookieRevised means something else by "icon ripper", not Res Hacker....

Cookie, tell us pls...??

Try Axialis IconWorkshop, supports XP icons and can export those to transparent PNG's. But you can only get the WMP icon that way, not the play buttons etc, which are the main problem...

Yeah, play icon and stuff are not "separate" components... they only exist with "a peace of player around"... Too bad

But you can as well steal album, artist, etc icons i think... :-/

RE: WMPlus 2 - Windows Media Player plugin
check out the other files that are from WMP; I think for example of \Windows\System32\wmp*.dll, and there will be more somewhere else...

Don't think of ResHacker as the holy grale ;)
Just use one of the bezillion (free) icon editors you'll find on the net.... For example IconXP on http://www.iconutils.com....

And as said before an icon (.ICO file) can consist of different icons for each resolution and with different number colors. Not all resolution support alpha-channels. Read up on some docs on what an icon really is and what a good .ico-file consist of ;)

A good and complete .ico-file in XP will consist of 9(!) different formats in a specefic order:
48 x 48 at 24-bit, 32 x 32 at 24-bit, 16 x 16 at 24-bit, 48 x 48 at 8-bit,  32 x 32 at 8-bit, 16 x 16 at 8-bit, 48 x 48 at 4-bit, 32 x 32 at 4-bit, 16 x 16 at 4-bit... Only the 24-bit (you're right, I meant 32-bit ;)) icons support alpha-channeling....

Remembering this, if you want to save the true icon you can use ResHacker. But you don't want the Icon Resources, you want the Icon GROUP resources. select one and then choose "Save [Icon Group]"...

And Icon is also not a PNG, nor a BMP, these are different things....
You can open a .ico-file as a BMP, but you will loose A LOT of information.

The buttons, etc. in WMP are not icons but actually BMP's, you 'll find them in \Windows\System32\wmploc.dll as I mentioned in my previous post ;-)

Don't use Paint for handling images with transparency. Use Photoshop or PaintShopPro...

Anyways, try IconXP and search for \Windows\System32\wmp*.dll

enjoy ;)

ResHacker is no holy grail, but it can at least provide a preview of the files in there, and also PNG's (which might have also been used, don't think ICOs have been used for the play button for example)... also, I have a legally purchased version of IconWorkshop, which can do a whole lot more than most freeware Icon applications, specifically when dealing with 32-bits icons (not 24-bit as you said, they only contain RGB information, not the alpha channel)...

And I think I know what an ICO consists of, I have written an XP Icon loader by looking at the ICO specs myself because Delphi's TIcon didn't load the 32-bits icons.

As for the System32 icons, I did not notice those before (and haven't looked very far as Fukafly was working on the icons already), so thanks for that. Again however, no single ICO of the play button, and like I said before, those are the only real problem as the rest can be ripped easily. wmploc.dll does have bitmaps containing the buttons, but they're not transparent, so they're of little help... there's simply no other way than manual editing of those buttons...

[Edit]

I see you've updated your post. Anyways, my point still counts: the buttons still can't be ripped without some manual erasing...
